If you can’t get enough of the pristine white villages of Andalusia, Mijas Pueblo is the perfect one-day excursion. Just 30 minutes away from the Marbella Club is the old town of Mijas, famous for its Arab vestiges, cobbled streets and bright, flowery balconies. Nestled among the mountains and with pristine views of the Mediterranean, it’s a hidden jewel of the Costa del Sol.
Since ancient times, the area of Mijas has been mainly devoted to agriculture and fishing, until the 1950s tourism boom, where the construction and the hospitality sector began to dominate. Nonetheless, Mijas has elegantly manoeuvred the temptations of excess in efforts to retain its authenticity and identity. Rhythm of life is paced and its interesting mix of locals combined with an established expat community, makes for an ambience that is warm and culturally diverse.
Visit La Muralla, remains of an Arab fortress that is now a must-see lookout in the midst of a vibrant botanical route. The gardens have been designed to have flowers in bloom year-round. The Centre for Contemporary Art houses works by Dalí, Picasso and Miró. Hike to a 16th-century hermitage, la Virgen de la Peña.
One of Mijas’ famous claims are the burro or donkey taxis. In the 1960s, when workers returned home with their donkeys, wandering tourists would beg for a photograph or for a short ride. Since then, the Town of Mijas has an official taxi stop offering rides around the historic centre. The Mijas donkeys even have a piece of Marbella Club’s history, as they were brought to the hotel for the famous burradas.
