As part of Marbella Club’s Wellness Talks, the founder of world-famous BASI Pilates®, Rael Isacowitz, gave a personal account of BASI’s beginnings, his view on pilates as a trending concept, and how to practice it on the go.

For the event, pilates amateurs and professional instructors alike gathered in Marbella Club’s Holistic Studio for a reception with healthy juices curated by our Lifestyle Coach, Magalie Paillard, followed by a personal talk given by Rael.

Rael spoke about how he evolved from a professional dancer and student of biomechanics into a trainer for dancers and athletes and, later, founder of the BASI method in the late 1970s.

When referring to how to make the most out of a beginner class for students, Rael said that “teaching precision and flow is very important to the philosophy of BASI. My approach is that people need a movement experience.”

Rael mentioned that pilates is a part of his everyday life and what he learns from the sport allows him to practice others, like paddle surf and tennis. However, one must never forget his responsibility as an instructor, “You make a very important commitment to the profession that you will be in touch with the work and will practice what you preach.”

Quite graciously, Rael also spoke about his overall experience at Marbella Club Hotel: “This is probably the most unique hotel I’ve stayed at. It manages to find a beautiful balance between elegance and comfort with wellness.”

Following his talk, Rael was able to work one-on-one with the Hotel’s pilates instructors.

Rael Isacowitz is one of the leading pilates instructors of our time. He is the founder of BASI Pilates®, with more than 100 studios worldwide. An author and lecturer, his passion for the art of pilates is well known, as is the unique athleticism he brings to the method – a synthesis of body, mind and spirit.
